The brief

We needed to create a world for illustrations to live in. Thomson Reuters had come up with an illustrative style to represent Google’s Chrome OS security for business. We worked closely with them to flesh out the design concept, create a storyboard and then bring it to life in a full animation.

Our approach

Security’s no joke, but balancing light and dark grabs attention. We blended 2D, 3D, and frame animation to balance out eye-catching playfulness with the serious subject matter. The client asked us to explore a fully AI-generated voiceover, so we got stuck in testing out different models.

How we did it

To do Reuter’s quirky character illustrations justice, we manually animated each character for smooth, fluid motion, then halved the frame rate as a nod to traditional cel animation. This technique dialled up the personality and gave everything a hand-drawn feel.

We designed some UI elements as 3D objects so they felt more real and reactive within the world of the animation.

The Result

The client was thrilled, as was Google – and they asked to produce short GIFs lifted from the main film to use as extra promotional assets.
